Alt-History or alternative history (AH) is a genre of fiction consisting of stories in which one or more historical events occur differently from reality. Strange that in these times of increasing racial polarization, Alt-Historical accounts of the post-civil war era, have become a battleground for two entertainment titans; Amazon and HBO. 

In the Amazon series called "Black America," freed slaves are given the territories of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama as reparations after the civil war. They form a sovereign nation called New Colonia. Through 150 years of military incursions, assassinations, regime changes, and coups, New Colonia ascends as a major global player. The United States spirals into a period of rapid decline. 

In the HBO series "Confederate" the South wins the Civil War and slavery remains legal in half the country well into modern times. The storyline revolves around a series of events leading to a "Third American Civil War."  Once the series was announced, "Confederate"  set off a political firestorm. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners of Game of Thrones, are the creators of Confederacy." Producer and writers Malcolm Spellman and his wife Nichelle Tramble Spellman, who are Black, defended the series.

Malcolm Spelman: I think that “winning” creates the wrong image. [In the world of Confederate], it was a standstill. They maintain their position, the North maintains theirs. What people need to recognize is, and it makes me really want to get into the show: The shit is alive and real today. I think people have got to stop pretending that slavery was something that happened and went away. The shit is affecting people in the present day. And it’s easy for folks to hide from it, because sometimes you’re not able to map it out, especially with how insidious racism has become. But everyone knows that with Trump coming into power, a bunch of shit that had always been there got resurfaced. So the idea that this would be pornography goes back to people imagining whips and plantations. What they need to be imagining is how fucked up things are today, and a story that allows us to now dramatize it in a more tangible matter.

Excerpts on Black Culture from "Black Rednecks and White Liberals"

EDITOR'S NOTE: Alt-Black.com disagrees with any assessment or analysis that posits there is something intrinsic to Black culture that prevents Blacks from escaping poverty. Conservative social theorist Thomas Sowell walks that line. However his analysis in Black Rednecks and White Liberals is illuminating in one sense, it is a damning indictment  of white southern culture and the destructive force it continues to exert today among Southern and Appalachian whites. 

The close proximity of poor blacks and whites for 250 years cannot totally be discounted in terms of cultural cross pollination. But to argue that this transfer of "redneck/cracker" culture to the Darker Nation still dominates our common cultural and psychological profile is a bridge too far. 


"What the rednecks or crackers brought with them across the ocean [From England, Scotland and Ireland]  was a whole constellation of attitudes, values, and behavior patterns that might have made sense in the world in they had lived for centuries, but which would prove to be counterproductive in the world to which they were going--and counterproductive to the blacks who would live in their midst for centuries before emerging into freedom and migrating to the great urban centers of the United States, taking with them similar values. 

The cultural values and social patterns prevalent among Southern whites included an aversion to work, proneness to violence, neglect of education, sexual promiscuity, improvidence, drunkenness, lack of entrepreneurship, reckless searches for excitement, lively music and dance, and a style of religious oratory marked by strident rhetoric, unbridled emotions and flamboyant imagery. This oratorical style carried over into the political oratory of the region in both the Jim Crow era and the civil rights era, and has continued on into our own times among black politicians, preachers, and activists. Touchy pride, vanity, and boastful self dramatization were also part of this redneck culture among people from regions of Britain "where the civilization was the least developed."
